                    Robbinsville High School

Chapter of the National Honor Society

 The Selection Process

The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of Robbinsville High School.

Step 1

*The following requirements must be achieved in order to receive an application

Candidates eligible for election to this chapter must be members of the junior class:

  1. have been in attendance for a period of one year at Robbinsville High School. Be in good standing with high school attendance records.
  2. have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.866 out of 4.0, cumulative weighted grade point average at the end of second marking period, junior year. This scholastic level of achievement shall remain fixed, and shall be the required minimum scholastic level of achievement for admission to candidacy.
  3. a minimum of 30 community service hours complete with contacts. (Please see below for these expectations)

These requirements do not guarantee admittance into the RHS Chapter of The National Honor Society. Upon meeting the grade level, attendance, and GPA standard requirements, candidates shall then be considered based on their service, leadership, and character. All candidates are expected to meet and/or exceed expectations for each category.

Step 2

The Application:

Students who are eligible scholastically (i.e., candidates) are notified and informed that for further consideration for selection to the chapter, they may complete the Student  Information Form.  This form outlines the candidate’s accomplishments in such areas as Service and Leadership.  This form is signed by the student and his/her parent(s), indicating that the content is both complete and accurate.

Step 3

Faculty Forms:

Student’s present two faculty members of their choice with a Faculty Evaluation Form. These forms are kept confidential by the Faculty Council.  The actual selection of new members, however, is made by a vote of the five appointed members of the Faculty Council.

***Each student’s name is removed from the Faculty Evaluation Form and students are assigned a number.  From this point on, until the final selection, absolute anonymity is maintained.  A candidate must receive an acceptable rating (3 or 4) in each of the categories of character, leadership, and service on the Faculty Evaluation Form.   Only after the Faculty Council makes its decisions are the numbers identified as names of students.

When assessing the students, the Faculty Selection Committee looks for:

  1. Evidence of sustained involvement and the degree of difficulty of the activities described by the students.
    1. For example, in terms of service, activities that are done on a student's own time, require a high level of commitment, and have been a part of a student's life for many years will be valued more heavily than those that are not.
    2. In addition, the forms provided ask students to give examples of how they have demonstrated leadership. Students who can provide strong areas of leadership and can demonstrate the necessity in this skill will be valued more heavily than those with no leadership experience.
    3. Finally, administration will consider the character of the applicant. They will read the applicants open-ended questions and also look and all faculty evaluation forms.
      1. The committee will also consider relevant, credible evidence of unethical behavior as part of its assessment of the student's character. Unethical behavior includes, but is not limited to, lying, cheating, acting dishonestly, plagiarizing, violating Robbinsville High School’s student code of behavior, and breaking the law outside of school.

At this final phase, the student applicants are no longer anonymous. Administration will review each student's discipline file and also solicit information from other faculty members and administrators in order to have as clear and full picture of a student's character as possible.

Each of the categories is weighted equally, but a student needs to have a strong number of points in each category in order for him or her to be accepted.

Step 4

The Acceptance:

Those candidates receiving a majority vote of the Faculty Council shall be named to the Principal prior to being invited for induction into the chapter.  The induction ceremony for successful candidates will be held in May at Robbinsville High School.  Further information will follow in a letter to each successful candidate.
